Los Angeles Times – 02 March 2026 – Los Angeles Times

“Whenever I got a bunch of likes I was really happy, and it made me feel really good about myself,” said the woman, known in court as Kaley G.M. “If I didn’t, I would feel insecure, like I looked ugly.” One alternate juror wept openly during the testimony in Los Angeles County Supe- rior Court, wiping her tears on her sweater. Kaley’s lawsuit is a test case chosen from among hundreds alleging that so- cial media apps were de- signed to snare young kids and keep them hooked. But it’s her Los Angeles jury that will set the stakes for thousands of suits still to come, making this one of the corporate world’s most closely watched legal bat- tles.
And as the landmark trial closes out its first month, gender has emerged as a di- viding — and perhaps deci- sive — factor in the case. Kaley, the first plaintiff ever to reach trial in a case seeking to hold platforms li- able for alleged harms to children, said she became addicted to social media as a grade-schooler and has struggled for more than a decade. She charges the apps left her with anxiety, depression and body dys- morphia — a pathologically distorted self-perception, most prevalent in girls, that a growing body of research has linked to social platforms.
“Every single day I was on it, all day long,” the Chico, Calif., woman said Thurs- day, her voice tremulous and her cheeks flushed to the color of her rose maxi dress. “I can’t [stop], it’s just too hard to be without it, and every time I’ve tried to stop I’ve just been unsuc- cessful.” Women on the jury bris- tled when Meta attorney An- drew Stanner needled Ka- ley’s former therapist over her credentials during a tense cross-examination on Wednesday — “You have a master’s degree, right?”
Men in the gallery laughed at the barb.
At least three U.S. service members are among the hundreds confirmed dead in a widening war across the Middle East, set off by a string of U.S. and Israeli at- tacks on Iran over the week- end that killed Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Pledging to continue the “combat operations … in full force,” President Trump on Sunday warned that more American troops may die in the escalating conflict. “Sadly there will likely be more before it ends,” Trump said in an update about 36 hours after the first attacks.
He offered condolences to the families of the three “true American patriots” who he said made the ulti- mate sacrifice for the nation, but said there will “likely be more. But we’ll do every- thing possible where that won’t be the case.” Pentagon officialsdid not share circumstances about the deaths, including where the service members died.
The news came as Iran con- tinued to intensify counter- attacks across the region, in- cluding on American mili- tary bases. U.S. military officials said at least five other service members were seriously wounded and several others experienced minor shrapnel injuries and concussions. Iranian officials contin- ued to pledge revenge for the attacks across their country and especially for the killing of Khamenei on Saturday. “To the countries of the region: We are not seeking to attack you,” Ali Larijani, a top Iranian official, said on X.
“But when the bases lo- cated in your country are used against us, and when the United States carries out operations in the region re- lying on these forces, then we will target those bases.” Casualties across the re- gion mounted Sunday, as the war’s second day brought increased violence, with dozens of civilian deaths confirmed in Iran, Is- rael, Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates. An Iranian missile attack on Sunday hit a synagogue in central Israel, killing at least nine people, bringing the country’s death toll to 11 since the start of its joint as- sault with the U.S.
against Iran, according to Israeli of- ficials. At least 28 others were wounded in the retalia- tory strike and 11 others were still missing. U.S. Navy At least 3 U.S. troops killed in Iran conflict [See Iran, A4] Trump warns more American deaths are likely as Mideast violence spreads. By Grace Toohey and Gavin J. Quinton According to President Trump, the United States attacked Iran because the Islamic Republic posed “im- minent threats” to the U.S.
and its allies, including through its use of terrorist proxies and continued pur- suit of nuclear weapons. “Its menacing activities directly endanger the United States, our troops, our bases overseas and our allies throughout the world,” he said in a recorded statement Saturday.
