Most days Elfo is perched next to the charming window display of small ceramic plates embossed with the Eiffel Tower and glazed coffee cups with delicate butterfly handles. The irony is that the gorgeous tabby who has become a mascot for the atelier doesn’t belong to shop owner Anita Laginha.

Instead, he’s a neighbour’s cat who, every morning without fail, reports to work on a purely volunteer basis (no kibbles exchanged). Laginha’s boutique stocks a wide range of handmade tableware and decorative ceramics, all handmade by Laginha and fired at her downstairs workshop. Inspired by her son, a boulanger (artisan baker), her mini croissant charms have a practical purpose as a repose-couteau (knife-rest) or a fève, a trinket hidden in a galette des rois (king’s cake), traditionally baked to celebrate Epiphany (here).

Laginha also holds casual ceramics classes throughout the week, with no strict schedules or internet forms: she encourages eager students to call. Despite its dusty appearance, B Rocante has a high turnover that makes it worth visiting on a regular basis. I’ve furnished my apartment with many objects from B Rocante, including antique mirrors, furniture and gilded candlesticks. The shop is also my go-to for collecting objects for photoshoot set design. The shop is sometimes closed while the owner is scouting for new stock, so call ahead to make sure it’s open. I had visited the French capital for the first time in an attempt to ‘attend’ fashion week (without invitations to any shows or events).
