Just… waiting. That kind of presence made you feel like you had walked into something that had already started without you. Crown didn’t pause. Didn’t greet. Didn’t ease into it. He walked straight into the room like he owned it. Because he did. “We got a situation.” Lazarus’s eyes lifted to him slowly. Sharp. Attentive. “Speak.” Crown didn’t look at me. Didn’t soften anything.

“Tristan reached out.” That name alone shifted the room. Subtle. But real. “He gave an ultimatum.” Crown’s voice stayed even. “Britt drops the case…” A beat. “…or it’s war.” Silence followed. Not confusion. Not shock. Just… understanding. Because everybody in that room knew exactly what that meant. And none of them looked surprised. The silence that followed Crown’s words didn’t linger long.

Lazarus leaned back slightly in his seat, his expression unreadable, but his presence alone filled the room in a way that made it clear—this was no longer a discussion. It was a decision waiting to be made. His eyes shifted to me. Measured. Assessing. Then he gave a small nod. “Thank you for bringing this to us.”

His tone was calm. Polite, even. But there was distance in it now. A line had been drawn, and I could feel it without him needing to explain it. “We’ll touch base with you tomorrow.” That was my cue. Or at least… it was supposed to be. I didn’t move. “Mr. Mekhari—” Lazarus lifted his hand slightly. Not aggressive. Not loud. But it cut me off immediately. “You’ve done your part.” His eyes held mine. “And we’ll handle the rest.” Something in my chest tightened.

“I need to—” “No.” That one word landed firm. Final. Lazarus didn’t raise his voice, but there was authority in it that didn’t leave room for argument. He glanced past me slightly. “The houseman will show you out.” That hit differently. Like a door closing. I let out a small breath, shaking my head. “I’m not here as a—” “No Flame business will be discussed in front of a Vasari.”

The words came smooth. Unemotional. But they cut deeper than anything else he’d said. For a second, I just stared at him. Because I knew what that meant. Not Britt. Not attorney. Not ally. Vasari. Opp. I scoffed under my breath, the sound slipping out before I could stop it. “Aight.” I grabbed my purse, the movement sharper than it needed to be. Message received.

Loud and clear. I turned without another word, already done with whatever this was supposed to be. The houseman appeared like he’d been waiting for the signal, stepping forward to guide me toward the door. I didn’t look back. Didn’t need to. Because now I understood something I hadn’t fully accepted before walking in here. No matter how close I stood to this situation…

I wasn’t part of it.

These characters said, “Absolutely not.” When I started this book, I fully believed this was going to be the finale. Every time I tried to wrap this story up, it kept expanding. More layers. More conflict.
