Tracie, director of a children’s gym programme, and retiree Jon enjoy entertaining friends and family (they have four adult daughters, a baby grandson and more grandchildren on the way). Increasingly frustrated at the rather gloomy, dark feel of the kitchen – despite its impressive size – and their inability to enjoy any views of the garden, they began to plan how to solve the problem. ‘We looked at all sorts of options, including extensions, before coming back to our first – and simplest – idea, which was to replace two tiny windows with a huge – 4m-plus – window and add a new side window,’ she says.

‘This gave us a 180-degree view of the garden and brought in so much more natural light.’ After visiting several kitchen companies, they settled on Roundhouse for its streamlined designs suited to their classic-contemporary taste. Finished in a matt lacquer green, chosen to reflect the garden views, the central island is clad in fluted oak for tactile contrast. ‘I love earthy, natural materials, because they are so beautiful to touch,’ says Tracie, who selected a dramatic Verde Fantastico stone for the island top and Calacatta Monet marble for the splashbacks and wall run.

‘The marble is gently reflective and boosts the sense of golden light in the room, as do the touches of brass,’ she adds. With the island forming the central workstation in the room, an L-shaped run around the walls puts oven and sink zones in easy reach.
