Inhumane – Madison Doyle

Nix asks, holding his gaze at me, like he actually cares. But, the astute part of me knows this to be a false persona his narcissism wants me to see. I don’t say anything at first. Just stare down at the table, wondering how many times bashing his head against the cement wall it would take to kill the motherfucker. My heart is thudding behind my chest cavity so loud that I start to wonder if there’s an orchestra hiding in the walk-in freezer or behind the other doors that lead to a place unknown to me.
Then, I turn to him, staring at him blankly. I can’t even muster up the words I need to say to him. I’m grieving. I’m angry. I’m lost. I’ve never felt this type of rage before. Not even on my daily commutes in traffic jams. “Well? Is there?” he asks, his words sharp as if he can’t read the thoughts racing through my head like there’s a little glass window right on my forehead. I know that he can. I know that he knows exactly what I want to say.
But, he insists on playing this little mind game to assert dominance over me. So that I will think that I can’t even confront him. But, I’m not playing. “Yeah,” I say quietly. “Yeah!” I say louder. Then, I lean forward. “I’d like to talk about how you killed Dexter and made your family eat him. I’d like to talk about how you nearly killed your daughter and then framed me.
I’d like to talk about how you purposely threw our devices overboard. How you purposely isolated us on this island and thinly veiled it with the idea of luxury. I’d like to talk about how I’m onto you. How I will tear down each and every one of your masks one by one and reveal the person I know you to be. To everyone.
And, you will never see Quinnie again.” Will and Nix both laugh in unison. The laugh that chills me like the meat in the freezer. They both stand up and walk behind me. I flinch, attempting to stand up because I cannot let them leave my sight. But instead, Nix grabs my shoulders, pinning me in place.
Then, he leans up next to my ear, and whispers, “Now, we can’t have that, can we?” Without hesitation, there comes a sting in my neck, and now I can’t move. I try to speak, but it comes out as gargling. My vision blurs and the cement wall in front of me soon fades to black. Finally, there’s nothing. R.I.P. to all of the ideas I had for this story at 2A.M. but I swore I would remember them the next day, so I convinced myself I didn’t need to write them down, and then the next morning, they were just…
gone. May you find me again. My lawyer said that I need to give a trigger warning for this book in order to prevent being sued. OceanofPDF.com So… TRIGGER WARNING! He said that I do not need to include a list, so let’s play a game. How many triggers can you find?
READ AT YOUR OWN RISK! OceanofPDF.com Is that good enough? OceanofPDF.com H Cool, my lawyer says that’s good enough. So… Let’s proceed. Unless you chicken out. In which case, fuck off! PROLOGUE E HAS HIS HANDS wrapped around my throat. I can see his eyes transform from little round oceans to little rings of fire. I feel his hands gripping tighter and tighter around me, constricting any and all airflow. His hands are freezing. Like he just dipped them in a bucket of ice.
His fingers are curling around the muscles in my neck, and he’s pressing down on me like he’s trying to push me down into Earth’s core. I can’t breathe. I can’t fucking breathe. Everything is swaying back- and-forth, and I start to see little stars prickling my vision, painting the skies like outer space. I’m going to die at the hands of the sickest human I’ve ever met, and it’s all my fault.
I shouldn’t have ever let her come here. I should have listened to my gut that told me to run. I should’ve just killed him all those times he was sleeping right down the hall. I should’ve—I should’ve done more. But, that doesn’t matter anymore. Because now, it’s too late. Now, there’s nothing else left to do but die. OceanofPDF.com “T QUINN URN RIGHT UP HERE on Murdock Lane,” I say, a ball of anxiety spinning around in my stomach like tumbleweed.
Or really bad gas.
