All The Evils – Stefan Vucak (1)

He detached the microphone coupling from the BlackBerry and switched off the pocket wire recorder. Belconi had shown himself ruthless, but he already knew that. Mentioning the recording, Peroni simply wanted to forestall any more foolishness. He was careless with the FBI agent at the door. Instead of taking him out as the primary target, being far more dangerous of the two, the FBI man reacted with lightning speed when Garbaldi was hit, and his shots missed.
He had broken a basic tenet of tradecraft: when planning, think strategy; when in the field, think tactics. An amateur ploy and he deserved what that got him. His target would now be doubly alert and getting him more difficult. As he knew, there was simply no way to cover himself completely if someone was determined to take him out and risk death to do it.
He never contemplated going that far. There were just too many ways to deal out death, close or from afar, and Peroni knew most of them. The one thing both predictable and inevitable was Garbaldi returning to the Noris house to retrieve the papyrus. He might have the thing stored at Harvard, but Peroni always considered that a low probability option.
What Garbaldi should have done, of course, was have someone get it for him. Once paranoia sets in, it’s hard to trust, and he probably didn’t want to endanger anybody else. Noble, but foolish. What Peroni did not expect was the FBI also screwing up. They should not have allowed Garbaldi to expose himself like that. Would the FBI agent now publish the papyrus? It all depended on what Garbaldi revealed. Stay focused, he told himself sternly. Find the FBI agent and the papyrus. Nothing else mattered. It wasn’t his concern what the FBI would or would not do with the thing.
For the briefest moment, he toyed with the idea of asking Belconi to pay for the tractate; a retirement fund, so to speak, but immediately rejected the idea.

Stefan Vučak ©2010 Review This is a must-read novel involving an international trail of investigation, historical cover-ups, some damning evidence about the Catholic Church, and a whole lot of action guaranteed to make readers rethink Dan Brown for gripping drama. The wealth of background research and information certainly adds to a story that spans a few thousand years and draws the reader back into centuries-old theological battles without overwhelming the plot.
