We were thrilled to see Brian, who was not naturally outgoing in nature, excel in his commentary. It was like watching your introverted friend crush karaoke night. Brian even gave me a big hug after Franc’s final performance, a moment I’ll treasure forever. Skating into the Sunset (And Straight into a Wall) Naturally, I couldn’t stop there. I joined an amateur precision skating team, despite having zero precision. We took second place in a Las Vegas competition, which sounds impressive until you realize only two teams were competing. Still, we performed at bat mitzvahs, birthday parties, and anywhere that needed a little sequined chaos.

Then came Halloween at the rink. I went as a wild witch—so convincing that I scared Brian. Josh dressed as a dead hockey player. Ty, in a Spider-Man costume so tight, took one look in the mirror and exclaimed, “You can see I was circumcised!” Borrowing Josh’s hockey cup saved the day—and Ty’s dignity. But the real pièce de résistance? I forgot I was on call at Kaiser and waltzed into the hospital in full witch regalia.

The doctor, ever the good sport, barely blinked as he said, “Glad you could make it, my liege.” The Fall that Ended it All But like all good things, my skating adventures came to an end. Neurological issues started creeping in—losing my balance, falling backward, snapping at people over trivial things. One day, after yet another fall, I knew.

It was over. In true dramatic fashion, I stalked off the ice for good—and by “stalked,” I mean I shuffled away like a dejected penguin. It wasn’t just the end of skating. It was the end of that part of my life— the movement, the camaraderie, the ridiculousness that had made it all so much fun. And without it, I felt adrift. OceanofPDF.com s I hung up my skates, real life came crashing in. Near the start of my SLP career, my son Shawn—struggling with his own demons—had become unable to fulfill his responsibilities as a father.

And so, his eight-year-old son, Josh, came to live with my mother and me. In our tiny one-bedroom condo. “Cozy” was an understatement.
