I am more than ready for the life we will live at each other’s side. I love you, Arthur. Evey With my fate decided and my confidence in our love confirmed, Arthur will be my husband. It most likely will not happen soon, but knowing that we share our love for one another and have the same intentions makes any wait worthwhile. Sure that after reading my letter, Arthur will share the news with his brother, but not wanting to be the one to tell him first, I do not mention it in my reply to Tom.

I speak more about the details of Lily and Albert’s wedding in London and how I would love to visit once we return to the country. I give him my London address to write to me. Upon my return, I must remember to tell Marie to hide any letters I receive from my mother’s notice. If I am marrying Arthur, she will eventually see letters from him, but I will need to think of the proper way to tell her first.

Just as I pull my “R” seal back from the letter to Tom, a knock sounds at my door, and without waiting for permission, Margo enters. As fast as I can, I move the letters I have just read under a book so that she will not notice them. I would never change the relationship we developed, but she has taken on some of Eddy’s less favorable sibling traits, such as not waiting to be called in before entering a room.

“I need to ask if you have any spare luggage. Lily’s trunks are overflowing. We can order new ones, but they most likely will not arrive in time for our departure to London.” I look around at the two trunks I have with me. Just my luck. This is the perfect topic of conversation for me to suggest just what I wanted. “Will I be returning with you after the wedding?

If so, I would leave half of my belongings here while we are in London.” Margo saunters over to the desk and leans against it. Before I can move them, she notices the letters. “Are you still corresponding with the boys?” “Yes.” I am so tempted to tell Margo everything, certain she would be happy for me. Then I remember Arthur has yet to tell his brother and keep my mouth closed. She lifts them.

“What is this address?” Turning Arthur’s letter toward me, I freeze. My mind goes blank. I had not considered anyone noticing that, so I do not have a lie prepared. Perhaps I can tell her the truth, at least about this. “He is the one who collects the mail for his family and the shop.

He said just to leave the box number at the post office when writing to him so it does not get mixed up with the shop’s important mail.”

Verot OceanofPDF.com T PROLOGUE 1815 – 2 MONTHS EARLIER he monotony of working in my family’s dress shop is a constant reminder that while my life is nothing to complain about, it is unchanging and dull. “Who would have thought the view outside the shop would be even better?”

Tom elbows me in my side. “You need to be careful not to see too many familiar faces,” I warn him. “You are vulnerable out here. If you come across one of your regular admirers, another might appear and get jealous when they realize you use the same lines with all of them.”

“Oh, brother, you still have so much to learn about young ladies.” He shakes his head and continues beside me. Barely two years my senior, Tom never lets me forget he is the elder brother.
