Though that image may not have always been mirrored behind closed doors, Victoria and Albert are certainly seen as the founders of a dynasty that stretched across Europe, with their children marrying into the royal families of Russia, Germany and Scandinavia. Right: Victoria, Princess Royal and her sister, Princess Alice, in 1856 ➤ Victoria, Princess Royal (Vicky): 1840-1901 Victoria Adelaide Mary Louise, the Princess Royal, spent her childhood at Windsor and Buckingham Palace and was well-educated and multilingual. In 1858, aged 17, she married the Prussian Crown Prince, Frederick William, becoming Empress when her husband was made Emperor Frederick III of Germany in 1888.

Frederick died of throat cancer on 15 June 1888, just 99 days after becoming emperor. The couple’s son, the new Emperor Wilhelm II, was thoroughly Prussianised and became estranged from his mother who lost all influence in court. Although they later reconciled, she retired to Kronberg and the palatial castle of Schloss Friedrichshof – now known as the Schlosshotel Kronberg.

The younger Victoria died there aged 60, on 5 August 1901, just a few months after her mother. discoverbritain.com 39 Princess Alice: 1843–1878 Alice spent her childhood in the company of her family and was given an education in practical activities like needlework, woodwork and languages. When her father Albert became ill, she nursed him until his death, then acted as her mother’s secretary for a period of six months following the tragedy.

On 1 July 1862, when the court was still in mourning, Alice married a minor 4 Prince Alfred (Affie): 1844–1900 Alfred was born at Windsor Castle in 1844, and nicknamed Affie. He was second in the line of succession to the British throne, behind his older brother, Bertie, until Bertie’s first child, Prince Albert Victor, was born. After King Otto of Greece was expelled from the throne in 1862, Alfred was chosen to succeed him, but the British government blocked these plans largely because his mother was opposed to the idea.
