“Oh,” I whispered, understanding the joke. “Well, Iggy, I hate to admit it, but we’re here because we have a few questions we need answered, and I figured who else could help us like you can?” “No one,” Iggy said, reveling in the compliments. “Exactly,” Zeke said. “Do you think we could speak somewhere a bit more…

private?” He cocked an eyebrow, which apparently drove Iggy wild. Iggy’s eyes lit up, and he nodded. “Yeah, just give me a minute,” he said, dipping behind the curtain that separated us from whatever was behind him. A moment later, he reappeared and escorted us to one of the built-in rooms we had passed earlier.

He opened the creaky wooden door, flipping on a gas light. “Sorry it’s not more presentable,” he said to us, though his focus was on Zeke. “I wasn’t expecting company.” We walked into a small room with a kitchen on the back wall, a few chairs on one side, and a cot on the other.

I took a seat in a plas- tic lawn chair that wobbled slightly, making me debate whether I should risk sitting and having it break from under me. Sydney and Gunner stood, but Zeke took a seat next to me. His eyes widened as his chair swayed when he sat, much like mine did.

“Let’s cut to the chase, shall we?” Sydney asked. “I think what she means,” Zeke said, shooting a scolding glare at Sydney, “is that your time is valuable, and we don’t want to waste it.” “Oh, you’re not wasting it, Zeke,” Iggy said. Zeke smiled, batting his eyelashes. “That’s very kind of you, Iggy.

But we were wondering if you could help us figure out a few things about the LSS.” Iggy’s face tensed when Zeke mentioned the LSS, but Zeke powered on. “What do you know about the camp?” Iggy sighed, looking to and from Zeke, as if he was mentally de- bating the consequences of telling us versus not. “I don’t know, Zeke. If the LSS found out I said anything to you, they’d off me. Telling you guys about the hunters is one thing—hell, you could’ve figured that out on your own—but the camp…”

Zeke leaned forward in his chair and said, “Please, Iggy. We need these answers.

I sighed. Not the way I wanted to spend the evening. I leaned back in the chair, the hard plastic pushing against my back, causing more discomfort than the desks at my uni- versity.

Glancing at the clock for the millionth time, I blew out a breath and rested my head against the concrete wall. I hope Anita is okay. It had become my mantra, repeated continu- ously over the past two days. One regret after another piled into my brain on a loop. I should’ve made her stay in on Friday.

She might’ve hat- ed me for it, but at least I’d know where she was. I should’ve gone out with her to keep her safe. Maybe if I’d have just gone to the club with her, I could’ve kept her from being… I couldn’t even think of the possibilities. I’ve already lost my parents; please don’t take away my sister, too. We were identical twins, yet we were nothing alike. Anita was lively and fun. She lived in the moment.

Me? I was a recluse who only left my apartment for work and school. Ugh, school. I still had a paper to finish that was late, thanks to my piece-of-shit laptop that kept crashing. Between that and my old junker that kept breaking down, my professor was done with my excuses. But I didn’t have it in me to get rid of my parents’ car—no matter how much Anita in- sisted I did.
