April let out a soft laugh, then smiled at Jenni, her eyes glistening. Jenni blinked back at her, nothing but happiness in her heart. April bit her lip, shook her head, and returned her gaze to her son. When April’s energy was spent, they escorted the worn-out mommy to her room so she could rest. “I wish I didn’t have to leave him down there,” April said. “Yes, I know it’s tough. But we’re taking good care of him.” The nurse put the foot rests down on the wheelchair and supported April under her arms as she moved back to the bed.

“There you are. You need your rest just like your boy.” “Thank you.” April gave the nurse a soft, heavy-lidded smile. The nurse patted her hand then wheeled the chair out the door. The moment she was gone, Dr. Corbin stepped into the room. His shoulders seemed a bit more rounded, his steps slow, and Jenni found her mouth suddenly going dry. Holding his clipboard, the doctor took up a chair near the bed then cleared his throat. “I’m afraid I have some news you won’t like to hear.”

Corbin was always a straight-shooter. But now he looked down and tapped a pen against the chart he held. Jenni’s skin itched. She slid her hand into John’s and tried to swallow. The doctor pressed his lips together and gave a slight shake of his head. The wrinkles etched around his mouth seemed to deepen as he raised his eyes to April’s. “The progress we’d made with your treatment…well, we’ve lost some ground. Your blood counts are off, quite significantly.” The air was sucked out of the room.

Jenni tried to fill her lungs, her mind snagged on the words lost some ground and significantly. Dr. Corbin cut his eyes to John, and then spoke again directly to April. His tone was not unkind, but businesslike. “We’ll keep working to fight whatever infection is causing your fever, but we can’t start you on your next phase of chemotherapy until we get that under control.

Reality blurred and the floor seemed to be dropping out from beneath her. Releasing John’s hand, Jenni felt behind her for a chair, gripped the armrest, and sank down. Oh, Jesus… John ran his hands through his hair then over his mouth. Jenni watched him trudge over to the window and lean against his forearm, his free hand planted on his waist.

Not something to be earned through checking off the tick marks of religiosity. John Douglas understood well enough that God cannot be directed or contained—and the danger of attempting to do so. Whether He gives or takes away, God is still God. And life without Him is no life at all. In everything John had been through, he’d learned this: there is no why.

There is only do you love Him still, do you love Him even if? John peered up at the fluffy white clouds drifting across the blue November sky. Yes, Lord. No matter what happens after today, I will love you. He rested his elbows on his knees and gazed out across the landscape.

From somewhere deep within, an assuring anchor steadied him. He checked the time. She’d be here soon.
