“What do you want me to do?” “Withdraw Whitfield Heritage’s backing from Foster Development.” “I can’t simply dictate investment decisions. The trust operates under specific parameters—” “You’re Alexander Reynolds,” Trinity interrupted. “You’re telling me you can’t influence a decision about one property development? The same man who got the chief of oncology out of bed at three in the morning for my mother?” Alexander’s lips twitched in what might have been a reluctant smile.

“You have a remarkably inflated view of my influence.” “No, I think I have a remarkably accurate view. What I don’t know is whether you care enough to use that influence when it doesn’t directly benefit you.” The challenge hung between them, charged with all the complexity of their unusual relationship. Trinity watched emotions flicker across Alexander’s face—pride, defensiveness, resignation, and finally, something like respect.

“I’ll speak with Charles,” he said finally. “I can’t promise results, but I’ll make it clear this particular development conflicts with my personal interests.” “Personal interests?” Trinity’s eyebrow arched. “My wife is representing the opposition,” Alexander said simply. “That creates a conflict that Charles will understand.” Trinity absorbed this, not entirely satisfied but recognizing it was likely the best she’d get tonight.

“And the broader issue? The trust’s investment strategies?” “That’s a longer conversation.” Alexander moved closer, close enough now that Trinity had to tilt her head back to maintain eye contact. “One that I’m willing to have with you, Trinity. But it won’t be resolved in one night.” His proximity was distracting—the familiar scent of him, the warmth radiating from his body, the intensity in his green eyes as they held hers. Despite her anger and ethical concerns, Trinity couldn’t deny the pull she felt toward this complicated man.

“Why?” she asked, her voice softer than intended. “Why are you willing to even discuss this? Most men in your position would dismiss my concerns outright.” Alexander considered her question seriously. “Because you matter to me,” he said finally. “Your perspective matters. And because…” He hesitated, as if treading into unfamiliar territory. “Because I’m beginning to think there’s more between us than what was outlined in our contract.”

Her deep brown eyes held the weariness she refused to show in the boardroom. Exhaustion clung to her like a second skin, but she’d be damned if she’d let anyone see it—especially not the man whose hotel chain she was about to dismantle. “You’ve got this,” she whispered, straightening her shoulders beneath the tailored burgundy blazer that complemented her rich ebony skin. The scent of cocoa butter and jasmine oil from her morning routine lingered, a comforting reminder of home amid the sterile corporate environment. She traced a finger over the small golden ankh necklace tucked beneath her silk blouse—her grandmother’s gift when she’d graduated from Howard.

“Strength isn’t just in your mind, pickney,” Grandma Eloise had said in her musical Jamaican lilt, “it’s in your blood.” The cool metal against her skin centered her now, as it always did before big meetings. Her phone buzzed against the counter, the screen illuminating with her mother’s face. “Hey, Mama,” she answered, keeping her voice low. “How are you feeling today?” “About the same, baby.” Evelyn Parker’s voice sounded thinner than it had last week.

The cancer was stealing her strength by the day, but not her spirit. “Did you take your vitamins? You working too hard again?” Trinity smiled despite herself. Even now, her mother was more concerned about her than herself. “Yes, ma’am. And I’m about to walk into the most important meeting of my career, so send me some of that Parker good luck.”

“You don’t need luck. You’ve got brains and backbone. Now go show those white boys how it’s done.” Trinity laughed, the sound echoing against the bathroom’s marble walls. “Love you, Mama.” “Love you more. And Trinity? Don’t you worry about these hospital bills. God provides.” The call ended, and Trinity’s smile faded. God might provide, but He wasn’t covering the mounting medical expenses or the second mortgage her mother had taken out on the family home.
