If anything, the way she looks tonight should only highlight how wrong we are together. I’m dressed for a board meeting and she’s dressed to lure unsuspecting souls to Lucifer’s lair, but I think we can all agree that rationality and sensibility is lost to me when it comes to this woman. “Ruby,” I croak. “You look…wow.” One side of her mouth kicks up in an amused smile like she knows the affect she’s having on me.

How could she not? I’m not well versed in the art of playing it cool, I’m sure every thought is written in the lines and movements of my face. “Thanks, Hara,” she says sweetly. “Nice suit.” I look down at my navy suit and light pink shirt with blue striped tie and feel both under and over dressed in one. “I uh, it’s…i-is it okay?”

She smiles, stepping up to me so her breasts brush my lower chest. Even in her heels she’s quite a bit shorter than me, and I’m no giant at five-foot- ten. “What is it that’s making you nervous, Ken?” she asks, voice breathy and low. “Is it me?” Her lips stay parted as she looks up at me, and I can taste her minty breath blowing my way.

“Yes,” I whisper because my brain is running at too low a capacity to lie. The smile she gives me is wide and bright; gleeful. “I think that’s cute, but don’t be nervous. I won’t bite unless you really want me to.” A terribly embarrassing high-pitched sound escapes me, and she steps away with a chuckle. “Come on, let’s go.” She heads toward the elevator, and I nearly trip over my own leg when I see the back of her dress, or should I say the complete lack of back to her dress?

In my haste to keep up, I get a little too close to her back, nearly bumping into her, but in this proximity, I see a scar I haven’t noticed before.

OceanofPDF.com I PROLOGUE RUBY grip the laminated certificate in my hands, small hands, smaller than they should be. My legs are swinging, my toes unable to reach the car floor. I’m wearing frilly socks. I hate frilly socks. Mum makes me wear them. “I’m so proud of you,” Mum says, turning to look at me from the front seat.

Mum isn’t meant to sit in the front, Daddy gets angry when he finds out, but she says sitting in the back makes her feel sick, so when Daddy isn’t with us, she sits up front and makes Colin sit next to me. I like Colin, my friends think he’s scary, but he makes me laugh and I’m really good at hiding from him, that makes him say bad words.

Mum doesn’t like it when Daddy and his men use bad words. I like them. “Thanks, Mum.” I beam at her, my blue belt still secure around my waist where it was just presented to me at my dojo and my laminated certificate confirms my latest achievement. “Great job, munchkin,” Colin says next to me. His voice rough from cigarettes and his accent thick from a lifetime in the city.
