How We Survive – L M Juniper

Liv stood on the roof, sweeping her binoculars side to side. To her left was a sea of shingled roofs. To her right, overgrown fields stretched out endlessly. She searched for anything: the glint of sun off a bike, the loping form of Karma, the bobbing heads of Jake, Ange, and Far. But there was nothing on the horizon.
“They’re probably waiting it out until it’s safe,” Noah said, trying to make both of them feel better. The lack of conviction in his voice betrayed him. She wanted to throw the binoculars from the roof in frustration. How fucking difficult could it be to grab some guns and get back to the house safe and sound? “I hate this.” She dropped her hands to her side.
“I fucking hate this.” Noah glanced her way, concern in his eyes. “So what do you want to do?” She wanted to slap them around the head for making her worry, that’s what she wanted to do. You’re deflecting your emotions with anger, she heard Frances remind her. She inhaled and then held her breath before slowly releasing it to a count of ten, just like Frances had taught her.
It felt dumb. It always felt dumb having to stop regular conversations to “centre her anxiety into a physical place to banish it,” or whatever it was. She turned to Noah, all set for a self-mocking eye roll, and saw he had joined in. She grinned. Noah often found words difficult, but it was these little things that showed how much he cared. Even if he claimed differently most of the time. “Are you mocking me?” She squinted at him.
“No,” he inhaled deeply again, “I just like the way it tingles my chest when it’s so cold outside.” “What?” She laughed. “You’re so weird.” “I used to think that was a bad thing, but in this fam, it seems to be the standard.” He grinned through a few days’ worth of stubble.
