The latch clicked softly in the stillness. In one hand she clutched the bouquet Ayaan’s mother had given her — the once-bright lilies now drooping, petals curling at the edges — and in the other, the book Ayaan had pressed into her palms, still wrapped in brown paper and twine. She hadn’t unwrapped it yet. She couldn’t bring herself to. She hadn’t spoken a word since she left the mansion. Not because there had been nothing to say, but because her throat felt too full. Full of a thousand things she hadn’t expected: the unstudied warmth in Ayaan’s voice when he’d wished her “Happy Birthday,” the way his fingers had brushed her wrist and lingered just a heartbeat longer than necessary, the glow of garden lights painting secret constellations in his eyes.

It had all melted into a kind of softness she wasn’t prepared to hold. But here, at home, the air was different. Familiar. Safe. Hers. “Happy Birthday, Didi!” her younger sister shrieked from somewhere inside. Pots clattered in the kitchen. Tripti blinked, momentarily disoriented. “What the—?” The hallway light snapped on. Balloons clung to the ceiling like bright little moons. A ridiculous paper crown sat waiting on the coffee table.

On the dining table, a small cake already glowed with flickering candles as if the house itself had been waiting for her footsteps. Her bhabhi appeared from the side with a thali balanced in her hands, the diya’s flame dancing. A tiny mound of rice nestled beside the light.

“Tika first,” she said, grinning. “Then cake.” Tripti’s laughter bubbled up before she could stop it, tangled with tears. Her father shuffled in next, wearing his softest kurta, looking both proud and slightly impatient. “We waited,” he said, adjusting his glasses. “But my diabetes won’t wait much longer. Cut the cake, fast.”

“Oh my god,” Tripti whispered. “You guys…” “Shush and sit down.” Her bhabhi dabbed a warm red tikka on her forehead with mock sternness. “You didn’t think we’d let you get away with being born, did you?” Tripti giggled, wiping at her damp lashes. The cake was small, vanilla with a ring of orange icing.

Her name was scrawled across it in slightly crooked letters: Tripti — Sunshine of our House. She laughed harder then, the sound breaking like sunlight through a window, and cut the cake. Fed a piece to Papa. Then to Bhabhi. Then to her sister, who immediately smeared icing on her cheek in retaliation. It wasn’t grand or Instagram-perfect. The balloons were half deflated. The candles sputtered out too soon. But it was loud and messy and real. And for the first time that day, Tripti felt full.

Not of unsaid things, but of home.

For the plus-size queens who were pushed to the sidelines, made into the best friend, the joke, the background. Not here. Here, you are the center. You are desired. You are powerful. You are unforgettable. Because beauty is not a size.

Worth is not a number and love begins the moment you choose yourself first. May you always see yourself the way this story sees you — strong, soft, radiant, and worthy of the greatest love. But try telling that to Ayaan Rathi – the dangerously handsome, ice-cold underworld king who calls her aafat with a mix of frustration… and obsession. When her brother takes a massive loan from the him, Tripti is forced to work as a housekeeper in Ayaan’s heavily guarded mansion to repay the debt. Sounds simple? Well – not when you’re Tripti. On her first day, she breaks his favorite vintage sculpture, slips on his marble floors twice, and accidentally sends his machine flying.

She’s loud. She’s chaotic. She eats too much ladoos and Ayaan, for the first time in his ruthless life, can’t look away.
