Driving up sun- kissed California’s coastal route with the surf on his left and the cliffs, mountains and forest on his right, motoring over impressive bridges through places like Big Sur and Monterey Bay, Rashid had donned his sunglasses and dropped the roof of his hired Mustang, taking an upgrade from the premium compact vehicle that Mae had booked for him in London – he’d have to argue that one out later – he had thoroughly enjoyed the six- hundred mile drive, eating in diners and staying a night in a motel in the picturesque town of Carmel-by-the-sea.

Most people knew that Silicon Valley was the centre for technological design and development but were probably unaware that the valley just south of San Francisco was in fact a loose term for several valleys and within those, the cities of Sunnyvale, Mountain View, Palo Alto and Menlo Park were all cited as the birthplace of Silicon Valley. San Jose is Silicon Valley’s largest city, the third largest in California, and the twelfth most populous in the United States.

Other major Silicon Valley cities include Santa Clara, Redwood City and Cupertino. The valleys were home to many of the world’s largest high-tech corporations, including the headquarters of more than thirty businesses in the Fortune 1000, and thousands of startup companies who had placed themselves within reach of the beating heart of technology. Rashid could see that he had come to a wealthy place. The houses and vehicles were grander than even what he had seen in the monied areas of Los Angeles. “What kind of man is he?”

Rashid asked. Tom Greensboro was personnel director of Microsoft in Redmond, and his office overlooked a neatly kept park with striped cut-grass lawns and a large tree-fringed lake in the distance. Smartly dressed in dark blue business suit and a light blue open neck shirt without a tie, his air-conditioned office was large, minimalistic and the windows made up an entire glass wall over fifty-feet wide and a dozen feet high.

Rashid thought the man would look just as at home selling flashy cars and weighty finance deals as much as seated behind the desk of one of the world’s largest, most prestigious software and development companies. Greensboro steepled his fingers, elbows on the glass desktop. “In what way?”

He wouldn’t have cared, either because he enjoyed his work, enjoyed the stress in a pseudo masochistic way, and he liked the hours. Six shifts on, followed by four days off. His days were never longer than ten hours and he would never be required to start a shift until he had taken nine hours off from the previous shift. He enjoyed the night shifts the most because he liked coffee and generally suffered from insomnia and found that lying awake in bed through the night a lonely place since his divorce.
