It sold a rather spicy dish from the southern parts of the land, which consisted of little meat things rolled up in flat bread and then fried. The concept wasn’t bad, but the execution left me with a slimy feeling in my mouth and a churning feeling in my stomach that I hoped would go away before we made it back to the arena.

“I promise, it was a lot better when I was a kid.” Baldric apologized as we stumbled back toward the arena. Marina put her hand over her mouth and dashed toward a public restroom, and Xenia grimaced at the sight. “Really, really sorry.” Baldric rubbed the back of his neck sheepishly. “Look, you need to run along.” Xenia turned to me and patted me on the shoulder.

“Go on. We’ll be alright without you.” “Are you sure?” I asked with concern. “Yeah. I don’t know how much time you have left, but I’m sure it’s not nearly as long as you’d like.” She shrugged. “Go on. Go and crush Ozma’s face into the dust.” “I’ll see what I can do.” I grinned, then turned and jogged off through the streets.

My last glimpse of my friends was Marina coming back out of the restroom, only to turn around and run back inside. ◇ ◆ ◇ I forced my way back through the crowds and dropped into the competitor’s box with only about fifteen minutes to spare. Rylan was there, looking thoughtful. “What is it?” I asked. Rylan shrugged his slender shoulders. “Just thinking about who will likely make it to the semifinals.”

“Any problem?” I asked. “No, not at all.” He shook his head. “Merely thinking about it. Ceel will defeat me, and you’ll likely defeat Ozma. After that, you’ll be facing the winner between 7-Star Browning and her opponent, but she’s not going to lose, so you’ll effectively be facing her. The masked competitor will likely win his bracket as well, which means that the semifinals will be you against Browning, and then Ceel against the masked man.”

“He’s not here!” I called out in response to the persistent voice. “You’ve got the wrong room entirely!” The thick, billowy pillows were a far cry from what I was used to, even though it felt like a lifetime since the end of the demon war and the start of my new life in the Blue Star Duchy. All in all, I was still more than comfortable sleeping on the floor, or out beneath the stars, and I certainly didn’t feel like I needed the thick pillows and blankets and luxuries of palace life.

But the extra bedding certainly was handy for blocking out the noises of annoying couriers and butlers who were always trying to get me out of bed in the mornings. “I’m sorry, good sir, but I’m afraid that I do not.” The voice became louder as footsteps approached my chamber door. “Now, Duke Wilhelm, I’m afraid that you’re needed quite urgently.” I groaned and tunneled deeper into the blankets like a soldier digging into a foxhole. “No, I’m not needed anywhere at this hour. Go away and leave me in peace.

Duke Wilhelm is down the hall in his own chambers.” I closed my eyes once more and willed my dream to return to me. Just before the voice had broken in, I had been enjoying a lovely dream about Xenia, the merchant princess I had become quite familiar with over these past months. She and I had been strolling through a garden, and the way the sunlight caught her platinum hair was still vivid in my memory.

WHACK! Something came down on my head hard enough to make me wince, and I grimaced and almost leapt out of bed in response.
