You’ll be able to raise your index finger when you get there. It may even flicker by itself to let you know you are at your deep- est level…Go there now.” 3) Pause Technique: This tool has also been referred to as a silence technique, because the therapist is silent for a few min- utes during the pause. Sometimes these pauses can be timed in a rhythmic fashion, such as at the end of each sentence. A hypnotherapist can pause on a nice slow inhale between sentences.

This pausing effect can have a tendency to slow the speed of the client’s breathing as well, thus deepening the trance with each pause for an exhale during a formal induction. Longer pauses can also be utilized, perhaps in conjunction with a finger signal. It is recommended that the hypnotherapist refrain from pausing more than a few minutes, as he or she may lose the attention of the client if it is much longer than that.

The client may start becom- ing bored and start thinking about, or imagining, some- thing different than what is intended. Generally speaking, pauses are effective from five seconds to two minutes. Any longer pauses may lose the attention of the client, and the activity of self-talk within the client’s mind may take over, thus lightening the trance. Pause Script- “I’m going to be silent for a couple of minutes.

During that time, you can allow yourself to go much deeper into a state of deep relaxation, automati- cally, all on your own.” 4) Scension Techniques: a) Steps- One is asked to imagine a “safe” flight of stairs, thus avoiding the possibility of triggering an un- pleasant memory of falling down the stairs.

It’s advisable to refrain from describing the stairs as ascending or de- scending for the client, as some clients find it more relax- ing to go up, while others prefer to go down.

ISBN 1-929661-00-2 Manufactured in the United States of America All Rights Reserved I Dedication This book is dedicated to Dee Chips, my wife. With God, she introduced me to this field, and I have had a thirst for knowledge that has stemmed from this work ever since. She has been supportive during the 3 years that it took me to learn how to write my first book and chisel-away to complete it.

She is known by many in this field as my counter-part, and she is a good, loving, and caring person to all who cross this path. As one popular writer and trainer in the field put it, “Even if you scratch down to the other layers, you still find good.” Many Thanks Special “thank-you”s go to: Researcher Henry Bolduc, Dr. Masud Ansari, and Dr. Keith Clark for networking with us to make EIH Publishing and this book more successful; Author Susan Knox-Barry for editing; Author Richard Southall for cover design, desk-top publishing assistance, and editing; Dee Chips for sketched illustrations and proofing; Stanley & Jane Chips for parental encourage- ment toward finishing the goal; Lexington Coffee Roasting Company Owners Terry & Melissa Scholl for letting me write in the back coffee roasting room, which provided well-needed aroma therapy; and our Lawyer Bruce Tasson who made everything legal for what my kids refer to as “heaven points.”
