Tara asks when I enter. I know she’s been concerned I’ll be made to go straight back to Jahar, even though it took me a while to get it out of her. “New assignment. Halax-Ten,” I reply with ill grace. “What the fuck is Halax-Ten?” Tara fires at me. “It’s a paradise planet. I have to spend a week there, with you, doing nothing whilst the Guardian goes to the fourth quadrant,” I grind out. The trip back has taken it out of me, and I collapse next to her, a ball of latent anger that has nowhere to go.

Tara laughs. “Poor General Kylar. He’s such a hard case he has to be ordered to take it easy by his great leader.” “It’s not funny,” I grump at her. “Oh, but it is. When do we leave, and have you got a swimsuit? Paradise planet sounds hot and sandy to me.” The smile on her face fills me with joy, even if her insolence fills me with the desire to take her, hard and fast while she is spread before me, unable to move.

That thought is going to have to wait as I’m the one who can’t move much at the minute. “Zorx is preparing the shuttle for departure in an hour. We can get what we need on the planet.” I tell her as I place a hand on her belly. The rest will do her good, she’s close to giving birth and the last few days have been hard on her.

Verin told me she never left my side while I was unconscious and in the grip of the Fah poison. “Uhg, Zorx.” She rolls her eyes. “Is he coming too?” “Just him and a small cohort of warriors. Until I’m back to full strength, I can’t leave you undefended.” As much as it pains me to admit it, I’m going to need help.

He watches me closely, but I’m not going to look at him. He’s disgusting anyway, with his yellowing tusks sprouting from his lower jaw and his piggy dark eyes, not to mention his insipid green skin. He might like to call himself my ‘master’, but he’ll never be the master of me. I’ve met many different alien species since I was abducted from Earth nearly a year ago, but this lot are the worst. Who knew there were even aliens out there?

It wasn’t a question that had ever bothered me while living my normal life on Earth. “Get me something to eat, pet.” My master’s voice booms. He sits on the big chair placed in the center of the room like he’s royalty and stares down at me. I’m in my usual position at his feet, looking demure as always.

At least I can spit in his food if he’s not looking. I learned a long time ago that outright defiance is dangerous and painful. In my current condition, he’s less likely to hurt me, but the way he’s been looking at me recently, I’m wondering if there’s something else on his mind. “As you wish.” I lever myself to my feet, my knees protesting from the slave girl position he insists on, my big, pregnant belly making me ungainly. I head over to the table he keeps constantly laden with food and start to pile up a plate.

Pritan is a Grolix mercenary who controls this planetoid. They are a foul species, green skinned, covered with rolls of fat and with snouts and tusks that make them look like pigs. They are pigs, big, stinking pigs. I sneak a peek behind me, and unfortunately, he’s staring at me with those lust-filled eyes again so I can’t ‘add’ anything to his food.

Instead, I carry the plate back over to him and offer it up with an unbalanced bow. “You’re looking particularly delicious today.” He bares his crooked, brown teeth at me and licks his lips. It’s all I can do not to shudder. He puts out a hand and rubs it over my belly. “Particularly delicious.” He repeats. “Shame I’m only supposed to keep you until you birth. Perhaps I might just have to have a little taste before you go…”

One of his guard bursts into the room, and I thank my lucky stars for the interruption. “What the fuck to you want?” Pritan grabs the plate out of my hands and throws himself back on his chair. “Mighty Pritan,” his guard simpers at him, although there’s a wildness about his eyes that means he’s stumbling over the niceties Pritan insists on, even though he doesn’t deserve them. “The Haalux are here.” “And?” Pritan splutters with a mouthful of food, waving the Grolix equivalent of a chicken leg in the air.

“What do I care about that bunch of gray-skinned bastards? This is my base.
