“What if she tells someone?” Ellie asked. “Who’s going to believe it?” Tina replied with a snort. “Your mom sure as hell doesn’t.” The stench of cigarettes was overpowering as they headed back downstairs. They found her mother still at the kitchen counter, tossing back another glass of vodka with what looked to be her second or third cigarette firmly clutched between her lips. She barely acknowledged them, affording them little more than a glance before pouring herself another two fingers with slightly trembling hands.

“Mom? We’re going…” Ellie started hesitantly. Her mother simply raised a hand, cutting her off without even turning to look at her. Ellie growled softly in frustration, then nodded to Tina. Grabbing the leather bags they had taken from the cabin, they walked out the front door. “God, what a bitch!”

Ellie hissed as the door slammed shut behind her. Tina shrugged as they walked down the drive to her truck. “Yeah, Moms can be like that. You should see mine when she’s pissed. Won’t say a word to me for days, then out of the blue, ‘We need food’,” she said, mimicking her own mother as she started the engine. “Speaking of which. I’m starving, let’s get some grub.” It was about twenty minutes later, they found themselves sitting in a booth at Mabel’s Diner.

It was a quiet little place sitting off the main square of the town, that had that classic dinner charm with plastic booths backed with red and white striped vinyl. The lunch rush had died down, leaving only a few scattered patrons nursing coffee cups and the faint smell of grease lingering in the air. The fare of the place was pretty standard for small towns like this. Hot dogs and smash burgers with a slap of mustard, mayo, and sliced cheese.

After scanning the menu for a minute and being tempted by the steak, they settled on ordering burgers, rare for both of them. “What’ll it be, ladies?” the waitress asked. The waitress was a middle-aged woman with a shock of vibrant red hair, penciled eyebrows, and way too much blue eye shadow.

The Ambulance careened down the winding mountain road, threatening to take flight into nothingness with each turn. “Stay with me. Miss? Can you hear me? I need you to stay with me.” The paramedic’s hands pressed against her stomach, warm and sticky. The copper stench of her blood filled her nostrils. So much copper. So much blood. Her blood. “Miss?! I need you to wake up. Come on, sweety, stay with me!” he sounded urgent. Like he really wanted her to stay awake. Why should she? She was already floating somewhere between consciousness and the void.

Hadn’t she been awake long enough? The poison spreading like black fire in her veins. How utterly ironic. Her body heals itself, but she’s still going to die because of a little silver. Typical… “We interrupt our regular programming with breaking news from Pinecrest, Tennessee….” She watched the flashing of trees blur past the window. It was so stupid. She’d made it. She’d survived… Her eyes rolled, and the world spun as her heart beat like thunder in her skull.

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. “BP’s dropping fast!” “We’re losing her!” Moonlight. She was running in the moonlight. Something behind her in the darkness, breathing heavily, hunting. Hunting what? Her? Thump-thump. Thump-thump. “Jesus Christ, what did she get into out there?” No, not just her… Her heart? Their voices seemed to come from underwater. She tried to speak, tried to tell them about the thing hunting her, but her tongue felt thick and foreign. “…two teenagers and an as of yet unidentified third victim have been found dead at the Pinecrest dam, their bodies horribly mutilated in what authorities are calling a vicious attack…”

Thump-thump. Thump-thump. Not her heart. God, not again! Thump-thump. Thump…Thump. He was on her. Thrusting and pushing. Thump…Thump…Thump…Thump. His face, Rick’s face… Thump…Thump…Thump…Thump. But it’s not him… He didn’t have yellow eyes or black fur… Thump…Thump…Thump…Thump. The beast reared back, and a blood-curdling howl of triumph ripped from its maw, as a warmth filled her…

Thump…Thump… Thump-thump… Thuh-thump, Thuh-thump! “NO!” She screamed, arching as waves of agony split her again. “Jesus Christ! Hold her! HOLD HER!” She suddenly felt as much as heard a loud cracking in her. What was that? She writhed and squirmed, fighting the straps as a fresh wave of white fire filled her guts, spreading to every inch of her body.

Thuh-thump, Thuh-thump, Thuh-thump! Yellow eyes glimmering in the firelight. “It’s coming!” a voice says, her voice. The flames flared suddenly higher, the shadows moved wrong. Too big… Too many teeth. “I see a bad moon rising!” The music. Why was that playing? The sound of tires screaming, or was that us?
