She shakes her head. Once, then twice. It’s as if she can force another truth into place. But there is no alternate reality in this room. Only the weight of what her father had done. She sits frozen, her breath caught somewhere between a sob and a scream.

Her hands tremble against the file. Her eyes lock on the dates as if staring long enough will undo them. “I never met your father,” I say. “Never did business with his crew. Never stepped foot on his turf. There was no conflict of interest. No overlap. Yet, he brought his fight across lines that were not his to cross.” Her voice is faint when it comes. “He wouldn’t do that.” “He did.” “He was loyal.” “He betrayed his Pakhan’s organization,” I say.

“Then he tried to dismantle mine. He was planning to bring down two kingdoms. He was a fool.” Her eyes fill. She wipes them quickly, before any tears can fall. “He was innocent,” she whispers. “You keep saying that.” “Because he kept saying it,” she snaps, her voice breaking. “Even with a gun to his head.

Even when they had him on his knees like a dog, he kept saying it. Over and over.” Her fingers curl into fists on the file. “His last words were that he was innocent. He looked at me, and he said it like he could convince the world. I am sure his intention was never to betray anyone.” I let the silence hang between us. Heavy. Tainted. I do not tell her how many men swear their innocence at the end.

How many scream it when the barrel touches their forehead. It means nothing when weighed against evidence. I lean forward. “Justice doesn’t care about intention. Only action. And his actions buried men I bled for.” She closes the file and looks away. Her shoulders sag like the weight of truth is crushing her spine. I do not comfort her; instead, I stand and let her see the fury she caused by breaking into my office.

“Get out,” I say. She blinks. “Leonid—” “Out.” She rises slowly, her face pale, her lips parted. She looks like she might say something else. Might plead. Might fight. But then she thinks better of it. She is probably here to burn my empire down. And like a fool, I gave her the match.

The room feels smaller than it should. The walls press in.
