Enemy Within – Devon C Ford

“Is that what they say?” “Mm-hmm. They reckon maybe you can’t see it straight on account of some history.” “Oh, I can see it straight, believe me,” Tara said in a tone too close to a snarl to make herself believe the words she spoke. “That right?” The older woman’s gaze was shrewd, and her mouth curled at one corner into a lopsided smirk.
Unable to pretend in front of the mirror held up to her, Tara sagged and returned the half-smile. “I can see why people might think that, but you tell me someone better to hunt one of them,” she said simply. “True, but experience don’t count for shit if you make yourself a liability. How you gonna feel if you freeze up and get someone hurt?”
The blunt way she posed the question made it hard to be angry, and Tara recognized the tactic as an effective one. Brutal honesty, delivered through supportive questioning, and enhanced by good food and reassurance. Tara had done similar things to so many people to get them to open up, but understanding the tactic didn’t diminish the effect. “I already don’t forgive myself for what I did, but that would be ten times worse. And before you say it, I know what revenge looks like.
I’m not dumb.” “Nobody said you was dumb, girl. Just checking if you thought you might be.” The half-smile crept higher up her ample cheek and found itself reflected in Tara’s face. She ate in silence, just enjoying the company until the sandwich started to hit home and she felt revived by it. Finishing, she stood and carried her plate to the sink.
“Just leave it there. I’ll fix it later after everyone else comes through and makes a mess for me,” Mrs. Bodinski said, making her life sound like one long list of hardships.

“Scheiße!” Doctor Otto Hess tried to remain calm. He knew there was no way that the power supply of their safehouse would fail for a reason so innocuous as an outage on the grid or a blown transformer. The only way their power would fail was if someone skilled intended it.
