You don’t mess with the footage, and you don’t go chasing shadows if we see something. You let me handle it. Got it?” I hesitate. “Got it.” He smirks faintly, but his eyes are still sharp. “Good girl.” The way he says it sends a shiver down my spine, a strange mix of comfort and warning.

“I can get the equipment tomorrow,” Hayden continues. “Couple of decent wireless cameras, motion sensors. Might even grab a floodlight for outside. You’ll feel better once we can see who’s lurking.” I nod, biting my lip. “Do you think it’s The Artist?” His expression hardens. “I think whoever it is won’t be a problem once we catch them.” The conviction in his voice is almost frightening. I wonder if he’s picturing catching them… or killing them. We sit on the couch after that, the silence heavy between us.

I can feel his eyes on me, but not in the same way as whoever’s been taking those photos. His gaze is protective, almost possessive. “You really think someone’s been following you?” he asks, breaking the silence. “I know they have,” I whisper. “I can feel it. Every time I leave the coffee shop, I swear someone’s a step behind me. Even here, I can’t shake it. Like…” “Like they’re already inside,” Hayden finishes for me, his voice low.

I shiver. “Hey.” He reaches out, his fingers brushing mine. His touch is warm, grounding. “You’re safe. I’m not letting anything happen to you, princess. You believe me?” I nod, but the fear still lingers in my chest. “I want to believe you.” “Then believe me,” he says, his voice like steel. “Whoever’s doing this? They’re going to wish they hadn’t.” There’s something dark in his tone, something that makes me both uneasy and strangely reassured.

I glance at the Ghostface drawing on the wall, its hollow eyes staring at me like it knows too much. “Do you think I’m obsessed? With all of this?” Hayden’s lips twitch, almost like he’s amused. “A little obsession isn’t bad. It’s what keeps you alive in a place like this. Just don’t let it eat you alive, Lira.”
