The palace had been built atop the Heartstone, generation upon generation of Varreth kings adding layers of stone and mortar, burying the source of their power beneath cells and chains and the dark places where they locked away their secrets. We descended through a passage I’d never seen during my fourteen years of service—a spiral staircase cut into the bedrock, narrow enough that Kian had to walk behind me, his hand on my lower back, steadying me as the steps grew slick with condensation.

The air changed as we went deeper. It grew heavier, charged with static that made the hair on my arms stand up. The silver fire responded to it, drawing toward the source like a moth to flame, pulling me downward with an urgency that made my breath come short. “Wait.” Kian caught my arm as we reached the bottom. “Listen.” I stopped. Held my breath. A sound filled the darkness—not audible so much as felt. A vibration in the teeth, in the bones, in the marrow.

It was the same frequency I’d felt in the stone circle with Veyra, but amplified a thousandfold. A heartbeat. A song. A warning. “It’s awake,” I said. We stepped into the chamber. It was vast. Larger than the grand hall above, larger than the throne room, a cathedral of stone and crystal that had been hollowed out by hands —or claws—that predated human memory. The walls were covered in the script, the First Age language glowing with soft, bioluminescent light.

And in the center, rising from the floor like a tree grown from diamond and moon-metal, stood the Heartstone. It was not a stone. Not exactly. It was a pillar of crystallized silver fire, thirty feet tall and pulsing with slow, rhythmic light. Within its translucent depths, shapes moved—shadows that were not shadows, memories of the first wolves, the first guardians, the first sacrifice that had created the seal. It was beautiful.

It was terrifying. It was alive. I walked toward it, drawn by a gravity I could not resist. Kian followed, his hand on his sword, but the weapon was useless here. This was not a place for steel. This was a place for blood. As I approached, the Heartstone flared. The light blinded me. I threw up an arm, but the radiance passed through flesh, through bone, illuminating me from within.

I saw my own skeleton, my own veins, the silver fire that ran in my blood instead of iron. “Aria!” Kian’s voice, distant, as if from the other end of a long tunnel. I couldn’t answer. The stone was speaking to me—not in words, but in visions. I saw the First Age.

I’ve survived fourteen years by learning one rule: be invisible, or be gone. Tonight, on my knees scrubbing Lord Harren’s blood from white marble, I’m the ghost I was trained to be. The brush rasps against stone. My reflection stares up from the pink-tinged water—dark hair escaping its braid, face plain enough to forget, hands red and raw. Twenty-one years old. Seven when they pulled me from the orphan carts. Fourteen years of being furniture.

Fourteen years of surviving. The great hall stretches around me in pre-dawn darkness. Crystal chandeliers dormant. Tapestries depicting Varreth wolves hunting men. The air smells of copper and beeswax and the expensive perfume of nobles who haven’t arrived yet. They’re preparing for the Lunar Summit. Seven kingdoms under one roof to negotiate treaties, arrange marriages, and pretend they don’t want to tear each other’s throats out.

I dip the brush. The water turns crimson. Three days, I tell myself. Three days of the Summit, then everything goes back to normal. But the lie tastes like ash on my tongue. Because for weeks, something has been stirring beneath my skin. Dreams of running through moonlit forests.
