My chastising is immediate. “Not invited into this conversation.” “Okay, so then what happens when I want us to go out drinking?” “You drink. I’ll drive.” “Yeah, that’s not really a we situation,” she swiftly points out. “What about a taxi? Will you take a taxi?” “I’m not comfortable with random strangers drivin’ me all around God’s green earth, baby.” “You weren’t even comfortable with me drivin’ us.” “That was more about me wantin’ to do the gentlemanly thing and drive.” “Control freak.” Her declaration digs poorly inside of me.

“You. Are. A. Control. Freak.” “I’m not a freak. I’m just a man who prefers to maintain a clear head and control. Control a situation, and you can better control the outcome.” “And, that I can support in an office setting, but what about the rest of your life. How can you be open to fun…true fun…if that’s your mantra? Like what happened on the plane. Wasn’t that fun?”

“You know it was.” “And you had no real control over it.” “Well-” “You let me have the reigns, and it was fantastic.” The vehicle slows down to a complete stop. “Perhaps we can have this discussion at a later date without an audience?” Our blonde driver beams brightly over her shoulder. “You can talk about whatever as long as it’s not launching pigs into space.

That’s really a sensitive subject for me.” “Hm…” Lu ponders out loud as she opens her car door. “That might make for a fun kid’s movie.” I roll my eyes at them both and grab our bags despite her objections. She leads us to a swanky downtown apartment building whose inside décor immediately has me feeling even more out of place. From the moment we got out of the international airport, I’ve been uncomfortable, to say the least. I’m already not a fan of major cities.

There’s the overwhelming honking of cars, the overabundance of fast food signs, and, of course, the stench that could knock over a skunk, and there’s the rudeness of people — like no matter what’s going on, you’re automatically in their way.

Moments that seem like they were ripped out of a sketchbook or script or graphic novel. Scenes that are so surreal you can hardly fathom their beauty because they belong on the pages of a highly rated comic book, not unfolding right in front of your eyes. Being on South Haven Island, on one of the most beautiful beaches in the entire country, while watching God’s gorgeous gift to country music, Cooper Copeland, croon “Midnight Rain” at midnight while a rain shower covers us definitely fits into the category of too flawless not to have gone through multiple edits.

My sister, Jazmyn, pulls her crotchet braids to one side of her face, drapes her long, espresso-shaded arm around my shoulder and sways us together, singing along off key as well as offbeat. The second the song ends, she shoots her other hand into the air and screams, “Woooo! We love you Cooper!” I smirk to myself, thankful the other side of my sister has finally come out to play.
