How To Retreat – Caroline Sylge (1)

You might use controlled movements to protect your joints, while hypermobile bodies can activate the core to prevent overextension. If you’re stiff, start with smaller movements and gradually increase their range. Afterwards, take proper time to hydrate and rest. Reflect on your practice Notice the quality of presence you have cultivated, and how your body feels during the rest of the day. Then, during the rest of your week, if you find some time, do your chosen practice again or try a different one, and check in to see how you feel after.
Is this something you might want to make part of your regular routine? Continue your practice Embodied movement is a perfect way to start your morning, or it can be used to pep yourself up whenever you need it during your day. If you’d like a practice to take with you into the rest of your life, experiment until you find the one that suits you best, trying out different classes and workshops. To get into the discipline of a regular practice, commit to doing a few key movements, then slowly build up to more.
Invest in a mat if you don’t have one. To make it easier to get into a habit, you could lay your mat out the night before and go straight to it in the morning. You don’t have to take a full hour – even 15 mins of embodied movement each day will make a difference. Note that listening to, and making, sound can also be forms of embodiment (See A Pause For Sound, this page).
Hosted embodied movement retreats There are oodles of lovely hosted retreats that feature Qigong, Tai Chi, Pilates, Yoga, Somatic movement, dance and other embodied movement practices to help you relax, rebalance and get fitter. The best are held in gorgeous natural locations and include healthy, nutritious meals and downtime. Take time to research the teacher, who will be key to a successful retreat. The most effective teachers will draw on the depth of their own practice and life experience, in addition to having a sound knowledge of anatomy, to help you move in the right way for your body.

I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life at the time, and I hadn’t thought of it as being either wild or precious.
