the woman called out excitedly as she approached. “I almost missed you! That wouldn’t be good at all, Mirror-Man! His Foretold Future shows that your journey to Downver is of the utmost importance.” Play along, Samuel thought. At least for now. “That’s right,” Samuel nodded in agreement, careful not to stare at the woman’s body, which she wasn’t even trying to hide. “To Downver. Where is the flying Nomad? We’ve no time to waste.” The woman’s smile widened, stretching across her face with an unnatural warping of her features.

“In that case,” she said sweetly, “let us get going right away.” Without hesitation, the woman placed her thumb between her lips then blew outward against her thumb as if she were blowing up a partially inflated glowglobe. Immediately, the woman’s body inflated, her sagging skin expanding to become taught. Still, she went on expanding, her skin audibly stretching as she bulged into a bulbous balloon of flesh. All the while, her joy never faltered.

She just went on staring at Samuel with profound happiness as every surface of her body expanded and reformed. After only a handful of seconds, the woman’s thumb popped out of her mouth. Her body was stretched so thoroughly that her limbs became no more than hands and feet hanging loosely from her ballooned flesh.

Her eyes had bulged and shifted to either side of her head, and paired with her elongated, fattened body, she appeared like an overfed, tailless whale with useless hands and legs instead of fins. The mycelial tendrils appeared to be keeping her afloat, and she towered over Samuel, at least eleven feet high and fifteen feet long. She looks like a mini-Giganventus. Except she’s only more horrific because she has human features. Were the Giganventi humans at one time too? Samuel wondered with dread.

“Get in,” she said, her voice now a low bass bellow emitted from her wide mouth. “My name is Inflated Sapien, and I will help you travel across the Earth to find Downver and eventually the Virus. He requires the Virus to complete His plans. Come now, Mirror-Man, and let us fulfill the Mind and the Earth’s unified will.” Inflated Sapien winced but her smile did not falter as a side of her bulbous body parted open, tearing her flesh into strings of sinew to reveal her veiny, pulsing internal cavity.

She looks even more like a Giganventus on the inside, Samuel noted with revulsion.

“Hunter’s Dirge elevates the series to new heights, seamlessly blending the intricate world-building and deep philosophical underpinnings that fans have come to expect from E. S. Fein. This third installment not only expands the dystopian universe with the introduction of the Walled City of Downver and the radically altered continent of Waru but also deepens our connection to beloved characters as they navigate this transformed Earth.

Fein’s skill in weaving complex lore with heart-pounding action is unmatched, making this a must-read for fans of the series and newcomers alike. The evolution of Thompson and the introduction of Tether add layers of intrigue and depth that promise to resonate long after the last page is turned.” – Reader Review “E.S. Fein orchestrates a symphony of chaos and harmony where the fate of the world hangs in the balance. Hunter’s Dirge not only continues the thrilling adventure of its predecessors but also introduces new elements that challenge our understanding of heroism, evolution, and destiny.

The vivid landscapes of Downver and Waru serve as the backdrop for a story that is as much about the internal battles of its characters as it is about their physical struggles. Fein’s ability to juggle multiple storylines while advancing the overarching narrative is truly a feat!”
