Hunting River – Isabella Torres

Sweat drenched my entire body. I was glad it did not cause my Triton features—more specifically the blue scales on my face—to be exposed. I breathed heavily, my chest rising and falling quickly. Metal clashed against each other, sending a loud ring through the morning sky. I swung my weapon towards the prince, but he deflected my blow with power. Despite the fact we had been training for hours, he seemed to have as much energy as when we started. He swung his sword towards me, the sun’s rays reflecting off of the perfectly sharpened steel.
With the last bit of my energy, I hit my own weapon against his, keeping my stance exactly as he had taught me; I did not enjoy the new positions, after all, they were different than what Rune had taught me. I had to remind myself I was practicing with Kiapo, not his brother. If I were to stand in the “wrong” position, Kiapo was quick to correct me—by smacking his weapon against wherever I was left unguarded.
Despite his harsh teaching style, I realized the positions he taught me helped me move faster. They helped deflect attacks which were much harder to stop before. I thought I knew how to fight well until I dueled against Kiapo. I was quick to realize I still had much to learn, and the prince seemed to want me to learn everything I could in a day. Then again, if I were to save Nyx from an unwanted marriage, I was willing to continue practicing and learning as much as possible.
It was not just my duty as her personal guard, but my job as her best friend. I knew she would marry some other prince, but at least she was allowed to decide who would be her husband. Finally, I copied his movements, hitting his sword with all of my strength. I watched in amazement as his weapon flew to the ground, crashing against the dirt.
We both seemed frozen, staring at the weapon. My heart pounded violently; what would he do to me for this? I glanced at him slowly, my eyes wide in fear. “Well done,” he nodded. “Pick it up.” I stepped towards it slowly, lifting it up from the ground and holding it out to him.
