Yet despite the gaiety, she could not ignore the sensation of being watched. Each time she dared glance in Mr. Darcy’s direction, she found his gaze fixed on her, an inscrutable expression on his face. It was disconcerting, yet Elizabeth held her head high, determined to enjoy the evening. Charlotte Lucas had observed her friend with concern. “You’re paying Mr. Wickham quite a lot of attention,” she commented quietly when she found a moment alone with Elizabeth.

“I’m merely enjoying their company,” Elizabeth replied nonchalantly, but she felt her cheeks flush with heat. Charlotte seemed to want to say more but her eyes widened slightly, flicking to something behind Elizabeth. “Lizzy,” she said in a low voice, her gaze darting back. “Mr. Darcy is coming this way.” A surge of panic coursed through her. The mere thought of being alone with Mr. Darcy sent her pulse racing, the memory of their last encounter flooding back in vivid detail.

The seclusion of the summit of Oakham Mount, his heated gaze, the way his lips had claimed hers… No, she couldn’t face him now. Not when she was still grappling with the confusion and turmoil his actions had stirred within her. Elizabeth offered her friend a tight smile. “I believe I need some fresh air,” she murmured. But before she could take a step, she realized how conspicuous her departure would be. It would be clear to everyone – especially Mr. Darcy – that she was fleeing from him.

“I mean,” Elizabeth quickly corrected herself, glancing at Charlotte with a sheepish smile, “I believe I need to visit the necessary.” Without waiting for Charlotte’s response, Elizabeth made a hasty retreat, slipping away just as Mr. Darcy reached Charlotte’s side. As she hurried away, Elizabeth felt a strange mixture of relief and disappointment. She was relieved to have avoided an uncomfortable encounter with Mr. Darcy, but there was also an undeniable pang of disappointment that she’d let her fear dictate her actions.

The rest of the evening passed in a whirlwind of avoidance. Elizabeth did not dare glance in Mr. Darcy’s direction until finally, she couldn’t stop herself. She caught him looking bored, his eyes scanning the room, passing over her as if she were invisible.

The sun shone brightly, casting a golden hue over the lush greenery that surrounded them. Bees buzzed around the colorful flowers, filling the air with their sweet fragrance, as the infectious laughter of old friends echoed through the countryside. As they reclined in the elegant drawing room of their acquaintances’ lavish home, the Gardiners exchanged fond memories, reminiscing about days gone by.

Elizabeth listened intently to their animated conversation, her heart swelling with affection for her amiable relatives. She savored every moment, feeling grateful to be alive on such a beautiful day. However, Elizabeth’s adventurous spirit soon yearned for the thrill of exploration, and she politely excused herself from the gathering. “I shall return shortly, Aunt,” she assured Mrs. Gardiner. “I simply cannot resist the allure of the beautiful countryside.” Her aunt’s knowing gaze followed her as she slipped out of the drawing-room door, no doubt aware of Elizabeth’s restless nature.
