At which point Minnie interrupted. ‘No, you ain’t . . . at least not until the missus comes ’ome. I can set out the lessons for you each evening to make things a little easier if you think you could manage it.’ Saffie felt as if she could burst with pride. Her breath hung on the air and all around the grass was covered in a thick hoar frost. Somewhere a wise old owl hooted in a tree and she stopped in her tracks, holding her breath as she listened fearfully until her heartbeat slowed to a steadier rhythm and she continued on her way, trying to be as quiet as she could on the gravel driveway.

The house was in complete darkness as she entered and only the sound of the grandfather clock ticking away the minutes broke the silence. She smiled with satisfaction and tiptoed towards the stairs.
