Minnie sucked in her breath. ‘What can I do to help?’ ‘Actually, it’s Saffie I’ve come to see.’ He shuffled from foot to foot as he glanced towards her. ‘I shan’t be able to attend the school for a few days at least. I need to be at home with Mathilda and I wondered . . . well, I know it’s a lot to ask, but I wondered if you might possibly be able to take my place and keep the school open until I can go back?’

Saffie was shocked. ‘But I don’t have any qualifications,’ she pointed out, although the prospect of doing what he was asking filled her with excitement. He waved her concerns aside. ‘I’m fully aware of that. I’m also fully aware that you’d be more than capable of keeping the place going.’ ‘But . . . I’m needed here,’ she faltered. At which point Minnie interrupted. ‘No, you ain’t . . . at least not until the missus comes ’ome. I’m more than able to manage things ’ere an’ I’m sure Elsie is capable of lendin’ a ’and if necessary.

Ain’t that right, Elsie?’ Elsie nodded somewhat reluctantly. She had quite enjoyed being looked after. ‘There you are then,’ Minnie said with satisfaction. ‘Problem solved. When would yer like ’er to start?’ ‘Tomorrow, if possible. I can set out the lessons for you each evening to make things a little easier if you think you could manage it.’ Saffie felt as if she could burst with pride. Like her mother, she had always dreamed of being a teacher but because of her upbringing she had thought it would never be possible, and now here Marcus was offering her a post, albeit temporary, at his little school.

Letter from Author Saffie’s Beef Stew The Precious Stones series The Days of the Week Collection Victorian Tales from Memory Lane Memory Lane Club Copyright 1kitap1.com/en T Prologue November, 1850 he young woman raced up the drive towards her home, her heart singing and her lips still warm from her lover’s kisses. But as the house came into sight, she slowed her steps and began to walk more sedately.

Not that there was much chance of her being observed, she thought. She had taken every precaution to ensure that no one would ever know she had even ventured out. Her breath hung on the air and all around the grass was covered in a thick hoar frost. Somewhere a wise old owl hooted in a tree and she stopped in her tracks, holding her breath as she listened fearfully until her heartbeat slowed to a steadier rhythm and she continued on her way, trying to be as quiet as she could on the gravel driveway.

The house was in complete darkness as she entered and only the sound of the grandfather clock ticking away the minutes broke the silence. She smiled with satisfaction and tiptoed towards the stairs.
