The blanket had slid down to his waist, revealing his ridiculously chiseled torso. How a man who ate his weight in food every day managed to look that good was beyond me. It was frustrating. “Like what you see?” he asked, not looking over. “Not really,” I replied dryly. “Do you like what you see?” My tone was belligerent. He reached for the blanket to get a look, but I clutched it closer to my chest.

I hadn’t bothered with pajamas after returning to bed after the bird incident. “No way.” “Since when don’t you want to play that game?” he teased. “Since you informed me last night that you’re afraid of birds.” He frowned. “For the hundredth time, I’m not afraid of birds. I just don’t like them when they’re all … flocky.” “Flocky?” “That’s a word.” “I’m pretty sure it isn’t.” “Well, it should be.” He shook his head. “Don’t go telling people I’m afraid of birds.

That’s a lame thing to fear.” “I agree. That’s why I was confused when you left me alone to go out to face off with hundreds of possessed birds all by myself.” “Don’t phrase it like that.” “How should I phrase it?” “You had everything under control. Besides, you don’t like when I swoop in—man, now I hate the word swoop, but it’s the best word for this particular context—and save you. I didn’t want to step on your toes.” “Yeah, that was it.” I kept the covers clutched to my chest and regarded him with a mixture of bemusement and affection.

“Would you have come out if the birds attacked, or would you have left me to my fate?” “That’s an unfair question. I knew you had the birds under control. I didn’t abandon you. I wouldn’t do that.” “It’s okay. I’ve been abandoned my whole life. I’m used to it.” I didn’t know I was going to say it until the words were already out of my mouth. Gunner reacted as if I’d smacked him, and I instantly wanted to take it back. “I’m just joking,” I said hurriedly.

Gunner didn’t look convinced. “Scout—” “I was just joking,” I insisted. “I know you would’ve helped if they’d started tearing the flesh from my bones.” His mouth dropped open. “Too dark?” “Just a bit.” He dragged a hand through his shoulder-length hair. “Scout, I would never abandon you.”

“Of course not.” I planted a kiss on his cheek and rolled out of bed. “I’m going to shower.

They were almost cooing. If we hadn’t been hunting monsters, I would’ve found the noise soothing. I, Scout Randall, almost never got unnerved. Today was an exception. “What’s that noise?” Marissa Martin, my least favorite co-worker, asked. Whenever she went out on a job with me it went poorly. For her. She was never close to death or anything—at least mostly—but she did somehow end up filthy and with dead …

whatever … in her hair. She seemed determined to make sure that didn’t happen this time. “Sounds like owls,” Andrea replied. She was my mother, although our relationship was new. At one time she’d been a hands- on mother. That had gone out the window when my family had hidden me in the system to keep me safe from those hunting me.

I was a pixie witch. Heck, now I was the apex pixie. Apparently my coming into power had been foretold and my enemies had been desperate to keep it from happening. It was too late now. I was powerful, and it wasn’t just my mouth fueling me. Andrea and my father Rick had found me months ago. Our relationship, cool at first, had been thawing, just like the Hawthorne Hollow winter.

“Makes sense that it sounds like owls,” Rick offered. He and Andrea had been volunteering as backup whenever I was sent on a job. It was their way of bonding. They were good in a fight—unlike Marissa—so I didn’t mind. “They’re basically owl people, right?” It took me a moment to realize the question was directed at me. “That’s what was described,” I confirmed. “Apparently they’re really big owls.” “The size of people?”
