But the money and the perks were better than he could do anywhere else. He felt like he was caught between a rock and a hard place, torn between wanting to leave and the fear of never finding another job that made him feel like somebody important. The truth was, he’d never wanted to be an enforcer. Every time he looked in the mirror, he saw a stranger.

The enforcer. The one who made others shrink inside themselves with fear. But all he really wanted was a friend, someone to hang with and share a drink together. He hoped for a different life where he could spoil a girlfriend with gifts and affection, but that seemed like an impossible dream now. The harsh reality of his job was a constant reminder that love and happiness were just not in his cards. Life had never seemed easy for him. He cursed the day he was born, coming out of the womb at over twelve pounds, and he only grew from there.

His parents, both of them dead now, had named him Newton. What kind of fucking parent names their kid Newton, anyway? Kids would taunt him in school with nicknames like ‘Newt the fruit’ or ‘Fig Newton’. He never understood why they had been so mean. It wasn’t his fault that he towered over them.

The last thing he wanted was to be the school bully, but with the constant harassment from his classmates, that’s the role he naturally fell into. After his first couple of fights, he became known as ‘Newt, the brute’ and later, just ‘Brute,’ which stuck with him until he was eventually expelled from school in the 10th grade after another fight left a classmate in the hospital. The following year was spent on the street, picking up an odd job here and there, but by the time he was seventeen, he was offered a job at a low-life strip club as a bouncer.

It wasn’t much of a job, but he was able to form friendships with some of the female dancers, who were kind to him and even flirted with him occasionally, but it never went any further than that. He often wondered how pretty girls could take their clothes off in front of complete strangers, especially for the men practically salivating at the chance of seeing some titties. Those were the guys he didn’t mind throwing out in the street when they harassed the dancers.

He worked his way up the strip club ladder, eventually scoring a position at the coveted Penthouse Club, one of the classiest gentlemen’s clubs in Tampa. It was there that he crossed paths with his current boss, who occasionally entertained a client or one of Tampa’s VIPs at the club.

Jean de La Fontaine Yeah, karma’s a bitch Jennifer Monet OceanofPDF.com PROLOGUE It was the evening of August 22 nd, 2013. Nicole Walker and her best friend, Samantha Stewart, were out on the town for another Saturday night. Both women worked as bartenders and servers at Willy’s, a popular open- air bar in St Pete Beach.

Dressed to the nines, they wore figure-flattering dresses that were sure to capture the attention of any man with a heartbeat. Nicole looked stunning in her simple white cotton dress, while Samantha sizzled in a red- hot number that perfectly reflected her extroverted personality. Both women were beautiful in their own right, but Samantha always seemed to draw more attention because of her flirty girl-next-door charm. It was a warm summer night.

The sun had already dipped below the horizon as they headed towards Jimmy B’s, a bar known for its party atmosphere and an abundance of single men. While they were no strangers to flings, they had grown tired of one-night stands. What they truly wanted was a genuine relationship. Both women attracted plenty of attention at Jimmy B’s, though mostly from men who only wanted one thing. As the night went on, it seemed this may not be their night of meeting Mr. Right after all.

That was, until Samantha noticed a well-dressed gentleman in the distance. Her heart skipped a beat as she imagined a future with this stranger. Samantha, who was alone at the bar while Nicole was in the restroom, was sipping her vodka cranberry cocktail when she caught a glimpse of him again. He was the proverbial tall, dark, and handsome, dressed better than most. He wore a clean white long-sleeved shirt, black dress pants, and tan leather oxfords.

His well-groomed appearance spoke volumes about him, at least to Samantha.
