She smelled amazing too, she was clean and fresh, not wearing any perfume or lotion. I could actually smell her. I could scent her in a way I could never have done before, it was very distinct, even more distinctive than her face. I enjoyed it as she stroked my long face with her hand, very relaxing. Melissa on the other hand, she smelled wrong. Evil. A scent of sulfur seemed to emanate off her.

“My cousins have a farm, and ended up with more horses than they could handle so they have to get rid of some. It wasn’t a breeding farm and most of the horses weren’t all that valuable so I was able to talk them into letting me have one if I could promise it would be well taken care of. I mean I didn’t want a horse myself, but I knew you did. So here you are!” Melissa explained. They spoke about me right in front of me like I wasn’t even here.

“Oh my god! Melissa, this is the most amazing thing anyone has ever done for me. What’s his name?” Sarah asked. “‘She’ actually.” Melissa said taking a moment to look me in the eye. SHE? SHE!? I thought to myself I whinnied loudly, with my ears flat back against my head. My reflex was to bite her. Flat teeth aside I think I could take a chunk out of her, but Sarah put her hand back on my face.

“Easy girl.” she said soothingly. It was strangely effective, I calmed down immediately with her cooing voice. “Feisty too.” Melissa continued. “She doesn’t really have a name, nor much training really. My cousins farm was pretty large and impersonal. She has a registered show name, but nobody really talked to her so she doesn’t have a familiar name. Really you could pick any name you like.”

“Oh, well that’s nice.” Sarah said. “I’ll have to think about that for a while, see what her personality is really like.” I have a name! I screamed inside my head. Michael, my name is Mike Goddammit! I neighed loudly as if I could shout at them for real. They were standing there discussing me like a piece of meat. I guess I was for that matter. I tossed my head in frustration. “Easy girl. It will be alright.” Sarah said soothingly.

“I know you’re not really used to people, but I will take great care of you.

I went to the barn on campus because I knew Sarah would be practicing. She rode every day after classes. She was beautiful. Long brown hair, big blue eyes, a smile that just melted my heart. We had several classes together over the last few semesters and I had helped her with her assignments a few times, as part of a study group. She knew my name, but we weren’t friends, acquaintances I guess. We could have been strangers for all that got me.

I never could work up the courage to ask her out on a date. Every once in awhile when I didn’t have much class work to do I would head over to the stables to watch her practice. I don’t know if she ever noticed me. If she did she gave no indication of it. I sat on the bleachers by the side of the ring and watched her practice. I was on the end of the bleachers just a few rows up, part of me wanted her to notice me, part of me was scared she would.

There were a few other people scattered across the bleachers so I didn’t stand out too much. Several other horse and rider pairs circled the ring at various gates, a few crossed the low jumps scattered through the middle of the ring. I used to ride myself, when I was younger. That was before my parents split up and my life got turned upside down, but that’s a different story.

I could have joined the riding team for the college, but I never really got back into it. I just didn’t have that much interested, but here I was watching her ride. I rode english hunt seat, just as she did. I knew my way around a horse, and I knew what to look for watching her practice. She posted around the curve of the ring in perfect time with her mount. Heels down, back straight, but not rigid. Her commands were subtle so it appeared that her horse, Charlie, just knew what she wanted.

Not really her horse, Charlie belonged to the school. He was a fine beast, but lacking in grace. Really he had been doing much better since she started training him, but she could have been really great if she had a better horse. Her own that wouldn’t get confused with the different ways of other riders she had to share with.

On one level I admired her equestrian skills, but on a whole other level I lusted for her body.
